At Cabot Hotels we know that there is no place as enchanting as Mallorca, and more specifically, Puerto Pollensa which is where you will find our holiday rental villas. And during Christmas and New Year this could not be more true, although it is tradition to spend Christmas at home why not head over to Mallorca and enjoy a different kind of Christmas? In this article we will be telling you all about the wonderful Christmas and New Year activities that will be going on this year in Mallorca.
Christmas celebrations in Mallorca
Although many areas of Mallorca go in to hibernation for the winter, some come to life and are bustling and full of joy during the Christmas period. Mallorca is a magical destination to spend Christmas as its picturesque streets fill with twinkling lights and charming decorations. With a villa in Puerto Pollensa you won’t be far from the charming local Christmas spirit which will have you in the perfect mood for the festive season. One of the most special and traditional events that you will find in Mallorca is the performing of the Sibil·la, probably one of the oldest songs and traditions, which originated in the 10th century and was brought here by King Jaume I. People from all over the island fill certain churches to watch the special hymn be performed.
No Christmas would be complete without a trip to the islands festive markets which you will find in many towns, selling both international and local products, the ideal place to pick up those last minute stocking fillers or a souvenir for that someone special back home.
Much like in every country across the world during the festive period Mallorca has on offer a vast array of special Christmas gastronomy. The island has everything from indulgent sweet treats that we are sure you will never have tasted before to slow roasted meats and warming soups that are sure to satisfy your Christmas appetite.
New Year’s Eve
The final night of the year is a big event for everyone and Mallorca has many ways for you to wave off the last day of the year in style. Traditionally for Mallorcans this night is about bringing together family members at a special dinner and entering in to the New Year with those you care for most. Many of the restaurants in the north not far from our holiday villas in Puerto Pollensa offer special themed menus especially thought out for this night. Some towns such as Puerto Pollensa and neighbouring Alcudia and Sa Pobla have special get togethers in the town squares with live music and dancing so that even the little ones can get involved in the night.
The Three Kings
Just because we have entered in to the New Year that doesn’t mean that the celebrations have to stop. On the 6th of January Mallorcans and citizens all across Spain celebrate Los Reyes Magos (The Three Kings). It’s a grand celebration for those from the island and it’s the main event during the period. In every town you will find gift exchanges, lavish parades and displays of its history. The event is mainly for children but that doesn’t mean that you can’t join in the celebrations with local beverages and food.
